Winter Festival - February 13, Saturday 11 am to 2 pm
Location: Widmeyer Park on Main Street Hancock MD 21750
Icy fun in store at Hancock’s Winter Festival Now in its ninth year of celebrating the joys of the winter season, the Hancock Winter Festival will be held on Saturday, February 13, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Widmeyer Park, Hancock. As in years past, a variety of seasonal activities will be offered to festival visitors. Sponsored by the Hancock Arts Council, the event will offer ice blocks for ice carving and a live auction by Ronnie Zimmerman of special items and gifts donated by area merchants. The main event is the Snow Sculpture Contest open to individuals, families and groups To add to the chilly festivities, a Hat Contest will take place. Visitors are encouraged to use their creativity and expression and wear their special millinery masterpieces to compete in the event. We will have supplies on hand and will help with creating hats. Contests are open to all ages and prizes will be awarded. There will be live music by Michael Kligerman. Among the other attractions that returning visitors have come to appreciate are a cake walk. There will also be a stack of straw bales for making structures and playing on. Hot food and beverages will also be available to warm hearts and hands in the brisk February air. The snow is being donated by White Tail Resort. According to Arts Council Chairman Sinclair Hamilton, attendance at the festival has brought visitors from numerous areas in the four-state region as well as the District of Columbia. This year’s festival is expected to bring out even more crowds to this unique event in Western Maryland. “We’ve had excellent participation in the past, and we hope the same holds true this year,” Hamilton said. “The ice carving event has showcased local talent and even surprised us with the artistic abilities we’ve seen displayed in some of the snow sculptures.” Hamilton added that any proceeds from the event will help the Arts Council to deliver future cultural and community programs in Hancock.
